Welcome to ASPA

The idea of an Association of Schools of Pharmacy in Africa (ASPA) began at the 2016 FIP UNESCO UNITWIN programme [Box 1] meeting of the Centre for Excellence in Africa (CfEA) in Namibia. It all began with a simple question Prof. Ralph Altiere asked at dinner one night. That question was “is there an African association of pharmacy schools?” The answer, of course, was “No.” His response was ‘you need one’ and explained the benefits of such an association found in other regions of the world – Asia, Europe, South America, Canada, the US – that includes networking and collaborative innovation between schools. That discussion continued at breakfast the next day. It was decided to explore possibilities.

Our mission is to advance pharmaceutical practice and science through advancing education, research, collaboration and synergistic partnerships in the African region.

Membership Benefits

Membership Benefits for the Association of Schools of Pharmacy in Africa

1. Continuous Professional development

Professional development opportunities in the form of workshops, online classes, or member-only materials. This will also be towards personal and professional improvement, even if it doesn’t benefit your area of practice right away.

2. Mentoring programs

Provision to either be a mentor or find one. Mentorship offers the ability to learn the pharmaceutical sector from someone who has been working in it for years. Or you can give back by sharing your expertise with someone new to the area.

3. Networking opportunities

Ability to attend events throughout the year that allow members to network with their peers, including annual conferences. This will allow members to expand their professional networks.

4. Access to resources

Access you get to newsletters, magazines, and other publications that can offer useful information about the pharmaceutical industry. This will include news about upcoming events, conferences, meetings, and even career opportunities not publicized elsewhere.

5. Getting your name (and your School’s) out there

Increase visibility, as well as that of your School. This increased visibility can be essential when trying to enhance your own professional brand, and can help your School grow.

6. Access to expertise

With the potential for a viable staff exchange program, institutions will have access to limited human resources (experts) thereby improving the learning and supervision experiences of students.

7. Access to laboratory and other training facilities

As Schools on the continent are at different levels of development, the least developed institutions can have access to facilities from more advanced facilities.

8. Staff Exchange programs to learn best practices from colleagues in other institutions.

This will be particularly beneficial to younger schools of pharmacy that need assistance with curriculum development and other key research areas in improving their growth and development.
